I was reading an article about this lady from Sri Lanka who was working as a maid for this family there. She complained that they were working her too hard. So they punished her for complaining. They hammered 24 nails into her body. Soo psychotic! The lady returned home and was too traumatised to discuss what happened to her but she was in that much pain they sent her to hospital. That’s when the truth unravelled she had been tortured.

I do hope they come down harshly on those people who did that to the lady. They do have an eye for an eye type policy over there. Let’s hope they get what they deserve.

Yeah the laws are very strict and punishments pretty barbaric. I looked up that in Dubai they do have the punishment of a firing squad and stoning to death but this has not been used on westerners.

I know two people who went to live there my brothers friends. They got married prior so they could live together. They loved it there. As long as you dress decently and have a licence to drink alcohol you are pretty much fine. Another person I know of is a teacher I used to work with. Her daughter is involved in music over there. She is still enjoying the lifestyle. Although yes the laws there do put the fear of god into you. IF I was offered a job there I'd only go for a year or two.

Yeah I was listening to a bit about the conditions of the labourers are pretty disgusting even in Dubai. Treated more or less as slaves withholding their passports. Not great press for Dubai, that is for sure.

Quoting MissMonteCarlo

Yeah it is amazing the mentality of some people.

There are teaching jobs in Saudi but I think that culture is a a bit too extreme. I'm open to Dubai though as that is more pro west.

sarah :-)

Dubai is a different world altogether. Its still a muslim country and you would be subjected to discrimination that you would never encounter in other places.
If I were young like you, I might consider a year or two assignment, just to experience a different sort of life.

But I would definitely register with your countries Embassy, make sure all my relatives and friends knew where I was and how to contact me,,and have multiple copies of my passport stashed in various safe places along with a supply of liquid cash, Just in case.
I truly feel sad for those unfortunate people who are being taken advantage of by very rich cruel " employer's"

people who believe it is ok to murder their own children in the name of honor have a very twisted send of morality.

She is far from the only one to receive torture in exchange for " work"
Sick barbaric subhumans. I hope they get the exact same treatment as they gave her !
( oh but waitm the maid is not of the same " faith" so its ok to torture or kill her)
